LanguageX Triumphs at WMT2023: English-Chinese Champion

Back in 2023, at the globally renowned WMT machine translation competition—which featured leading teams such as Huawei, Samsung, JD, and iFLYTEK—LanguageX stood out and claimed first place in the English-Chinese track.
A Prestigious Global Benchmark in Machine Translation
As the most influential event in the field, WMT has been held annually since 2006, attracting heavyweight participants such as Meta AI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance. Each year, the competition pushes the boundaries of machine translation through intensive evaluations across multiple language pairs. In 2022, the competition introduced major changes. Instead of relying solely on news corpora, WMT expanded its test sets to include more general-domain content, such as e-commerce and medical data—raising the bar for translation quality across broader, real-world contexts. That year also marked the adoption of COMET (Cross-lingual Optimization Metric for Evaluation of Translations) as the official automatic evaluation metric. COMET is a neural-based model designed to approximate human judgment in assessing translation quality. By leveraging both source texts and reference translations, it offers high semantic granularity and improved accuracy in multilingual evaluation.
Fierce Competition and a Standout Performance
The general-domain English-Chinese track was especially competitive, attracting top-tier teams including Huawei, Samsung, JD Explore Academy, iFLYTEK, Systran, Niutrans, ProMT, and Lan-bridge. A total of 800 system submissions were received.LanguageX ranked first in all four English-Chinese submissions, ultimately winning the track with a commanding performance.
In addition to its championship in the English-Chinese direction, LanguageX also achieved third place in both the Chinese-English and English-Japanese tracks—showcasing the robustness of its multilingual translation system.
From Champion Engine to Real-World Translator Tools
While the rise of neural machine translation (NMT) since 2017 has led many to predict that machines would replace human translators, LanguageX holds a different view: translation is a complex intellectual task requiring creativity, context awareness, and human nuance. With a team that blends technical and linguistic expertise, LanguageX is committed to using cutting-edge NLP technology to empower—not replace—translators.Beyond producing award-winning translation engines, LanguageX enables users to:
- Train custom engines with their own corpora,
- Focus on creativity and precision, while leaving repetitive work to machines.
Upholding the belief that "translation is an art, and translators are cross-lingual writers," LanguageX continues to build tools that bridge AI and professional human expertise.
